Redeye In Conversation With Sharon Boothroyd

They All Say PleaseRedeyeJoin Redeye at White Cloth Gallery for a conversation with artist Sharon Boothroyd. Her latest photographic project, They All Say Please, is currently on display at the gallery. After the tour, there will be a group critique session where attendees are encouraged to bring examples of their work to share with the group.

They All Say Please is a series of photographic interpretations of people’s inner most thoughts. After discovering prayer cards in a church, Sharon became interested in other peoples’ prayers as a way of learning about our shared inner desires and wishes. She went on to explore online prayer forums where prayers are posted anonymously by individuals. Sharon selected and edited a selection on the prayers, and explored their meaning through the medium of photography.

Sharon writes: ‘The virtual nature of these prayers signifies loneliness in contemporary society. The potential of the internet highlights our human need to connect; the screen offers an alternative community yet often results in arbitrary and isolated relations as is evidenced in these prayer forums where there are no responses, just requests. I realised that, at some point in my life, many of these prayers had subconsciously been my own.’
